Michigan Motorcycle Insurance

There are a great number of motorcycle enthusiasts in every state, including Michigan. These individuals enjoy the greater freedom afforded to them on two wheels. However, whether you are own a vehicle with two wheels or four, you must demonstrate maturity and responsibility to be authorized to drive it. Part of this involves obtaining motorcycle insurance.
In Michigan, motorcycle insurance is necessary if you wish to drive your vehicle in the state. It reflects the fact that you have protection against personal injury and damages in the event of an accident. Unlike some states in the US, Michigan laws require all vehicle owners to carry something called ‘no-fault’ insurance. This special type of insurance mandates vehicle owners to have enough backing to fully cover the cost of damages and injury even if the accident is someone else’s fault legally.
Michigan motorcycle insurance laws have determined the minimum amount of coverage you must possess. These amounts are:

  • $20,000 for personal injury of a single party in an accident
  • $40,000 for injury of all persons involved in an accident
  • $10,000 for damage to property.

A host of insurance companies offer competitive insurance policies with greater coverage than the minimum recommended guidelines. In fact, it is recommended that you opt for a policy for amounts greater than the aforementioned. This added safety net allows you greater peace of mind and protection in the face of an emergency. However, if minimizing costs is your goal, then you should only aim to meet the minimum standards.
While you can legally not wear a helmet in Michigan, motorcycle insurance rates will be affected by such a choice. You will have to get additional medical insurance coverage, be at least 21 years of age, and be licensed for two years to forego the use of a helmet.
You will have to supply proof of motorcycle insurance when you apply for registration and titling of your vehicle. Law enforcement officials may also request for your insurance documents in the event of an emergency, and failure to supply these documents can result in penalties. Therefore, the importance of motorcycle insurance cannot be underscored enough.
