The state of California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues a driver license for 5 years. The license expires on the birthday of the holder in the year shown on the license. A driver license in Los Angeles can be renewed by visiting the local DMV office, online, through telephone or by mail. A driver whose license is about to be expired is contacted by the DMV at least 2 months before the expiration date. This is done by sending a renewal notice in the mail. However, if the driver’s mailing address has changed and the DMV does not have his/her current address, then he/she may not receive the renewal notice. In that case, the driver must contact the DMV. A driving test may be required for the renewal. However, there are exceptions to the rule as qualified drivers are eligible to renew their license by mail or by visiting the DMV’s website.

Those who have recently submitted or intend to submit their change of address online within the next 7-10 days are advised to renew their license by mail and change their address on the back of the form.
