For the purposes of motorcycle registration in New York, there is a procedure laid down by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
First, you will have to visit an insurance company to purchase insurance for your vehicle by showing your proof of ownership. The next step is to visit a DMV office, along with the proof of ownership, Proof of identification, odometer, damage disclosure statements and a completed Vehicle Registration or Title Application form. You will also have to submit information on your date of birth, proof of payment of sales tax and show your New York State Identification Card (FS-20).
You will be required to pay a registration fee of $14, a title fee amounting to $50 and a $25.5 plate fee. These can be paid in the form of cash, check or through credit card. Once registered , you will be given your license plate. Motorcycles are registered for one year in the state of New York and the registration expires on 30th of April every year.
To be eligible to ride the bike that you have registered, you will need a Class M or Class MJ driver’s license. For this you will have to visit your local DMV office to undertake two written tests, along with a completely filled Form MV-44. One of these will test you on the information in the motorcycle manual and the other will test your driver’s manual knowledge. You will have to submit a $21 permit fee and the application fee for the original license. DMV recommends thirty hour of riding practice for your permit test. When you pass learner's permit test, you will be awarded a Class M or Class MJ level permit. You might also be required to take either a five-hour pre- licensing course or a full driver education course before you can schedule your road test appointment.
For your road test, you should check the Motorcycle Operator's Manual to make sure that you have all the required equipment and the official documents. After successful completion of the road test, the examiner will issue you a provisional motorcycle license. Your permanent license will arrive in the mail within four weeks.
