New Jersey Driving License Renewal

The state of New Jersey is one of the most populous. It has millions of registered vehicles and hundreds and thousands of licensed drivers. The State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) issues driver licenses. Once these licenses expire, they need to be renewed and it is the Commission which renews them as well.

Is it time for your New Jersey driving license renewal? You have two options to renew your license; in-person or by-mail. You cannot renew online. The mail-in option is called Skip the Trip. It is for those who are born on or before December1, 1964. If you are eligible for the option, the MVC will send you a renewal form along with an insert inviting you to Skip the Trip. All you need to do is to fill-in the form, enclose your check or money order (cannot pay through credit card) and mail. Your renewed driving license with your existing photo will be mailed to you within 7 to 10 days.

If you do not qualify for Skip the Trip then you must appear in person. At a MVC office you will have to prove your identity by passing 6 Point ID Verification test. This is for you own good since it prevents identity theft. Documents that you submit to satisfy 6 point test must be either original or certified copies. You can gain 4 points by submitting your birth certificate, US passport, current NJ digital driver license, etc. You can further gain 2 points by submitting US school or college photo ID card with transcript, FAA pilot license, US military discharge papers, etc. You will be further asked to pay a processing fee. You can do this by either paying in cash, check, money order, Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

So whatever your mode of renewal, it is important that you renew your license in time. You can renew your license six months in advance. Remember it is illegal to drive in New Jersey while either not possessing a valid driver’s license or possessing an expired driver’s license.
